Girls’ Tennis Repeats as District Champs

The Lady Panthers tennis team captured the TAPPS 5A District II title on April 3, in Tyler.

In girls’ single competition, sophomore Kelly Rathbun finished second, and freshman Kelsey Kehlbeck finished third. Rathbun and Kehlbeck both went 10-1 and lost only to the district winner. Kehlbeck had an impressive finish, as district was only her third time playing high school singles. Sophomore Stephanie Crews and junior Barbara Alexander finished third in girls’ doubles to clinch the team’s first place victory over Prestonwood Christian Academy. Juniors Margaret Edwards and Amberly Romo also had a good showing, as they finished sixth in doubles.

On the boys’ team, senior Neil Moyes earned a trip to state with his third place finish in boys’ singles, and junior Matt Chase placed fifth in singles competition.

This win by the girls’ team gives Parish its first back-to-back district titles after capturing the TAPPS 4A District II championship last spring in the team’s first season of league play. Now the team looks to defend its state title on April 20 and 21.
