Swimmers Compete in TAPPS State Meet 02.06.06 Our Swimming Panthers made a very spirited showing at the two-day TAPPS state swim meet on Feb 3-4 at the UT Swim Center in Austin. The eleven member team of seven girls and four boys competed in the preliminary races on Friday night. Six of them, Hayley Hatfield, Callie Cutler, Dakota Smith, Grace Kelsoe, Chelsea Jones, Kristen Stephenson qualified for the finals on Saturday. (While our Girls 400 FR Relay, did not place, they were first alternates for the finals: Melissa Cole, Chrissy Luke, Kristen, and Grace.)
In the finals races, dominated by upperclassmen, our swimmers won the following places: Individual events: Hayley Hatfield: 4th in both the 200 IM and 500 FR Callie Cutler: 4th in both the 200 FR and 100 BK Dakota Smith: 6th in 200 IM
Relay events: Girls 200 Medley Relay: 4th place (Callie, Hayley along with Grace Kelsoe and Chelsea Jones) Girls 200 FR relay: 4th place (Callie, Hayley, Chelsea and Kristen Stephenson)
Overall, in a tight race with Grace Community High School, the girls’ team captured 6th place out of 19 schools. Not bad for the new kids on the block!
It is a credit to the tactics of our coach Lia Oberstar in selecting races where our swimmers would likely final and earn the most points both individually and for the relays. Next year, with more swimmers and better conditioning, we have our sights on one of the top three spots.
Thanks again to all of you for your support for our fledgling program. It has been a fun and fruitful season.
