Smart Runners Rules:
- Safety First! … it’s safest to run on a treadmill or a school track. If you like to or need to, run on side streets and avoid traffic. Always run against traffic – so you can see the cars coming at you.
- Set up a course just by measuring it off with a car or bike odometer … it doesn’t have to be accurate to the nearest foot.
- Always let a parent or guardian know you’re going out running and where you’re going. Get their approval first.
- Stretch before AND after you run. It’s a good idea to stretch on rest days as well. Remember, stretching is slow and steady, 10 – 15 second count and absolutely no bouncing … a good way to pull a muscle.
- Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate … all day, all days. Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring.
- Smile … I don’t like to see runners look as if they’re in terrible pain, and yes, keep smiling even if you are.
- Get plenty of sleep … yes, you can use this rule to get permission to sleep late this summer.
- Eat healthy … your body needs good fuel.
- Make sure your socks are clean and your shoes on secure (not too tight but definitely not shopping-mall-walking loose.)
- At the start, run mornings or evenings; not at mid day … work up to the heat.
- Be safe, be smart, hydrate.
- Be a Smart Runner
