Parish Girls’ Basketball Wins Season Opener 51-47 against Fort Worth Nolan Senior Meaghan DeLong becomes school’s first 1,000 point scorer Oct 31, 2006 The Parish Panther girls’ varsity basketball team opened its season on Oct. 31 against the TAPPS 6A Fort Worth Nolan Catholic Vikings.
The Vikings took a 10 point lead against the Panthers in the first six minutes of the game on the team’s way to leading the Panthers 5-13 by the end of the first quarter. Parish picked up the tempo in the second quarter, but the third quarter signaled a great future for Parish girls’ basketball. Great defensive play by the Panthers’ starting five - seniors Mandy Sigman and Kassi Vander Heiden, juniors Amanda Daum and Brooke Thoele, and sophomore Katie McBee - was critical in the win. The girls forced turnovers and did not send Nolan to the line in the third quarter for a single free throw attempt. Senior Meaghan DeLong had her most productive quarter, scoring eight of her team high 15 points. The other impressive play for the quarter came from freshman Whitney Keith who scored four points and whose defensive play kept Nolan’s powerhouse players in foul trouble and off the boards. This was the first time the Panthers had outscored Nolan in a quarter, doing so 11-10 to end the third quarter trailing Nolan 29-37.
Parish came out in the fourth quarter with a defensive intensity Nolan had no answer for. Steals, deflections and forced turnovers by Parish frustrated Nolan. The Panthers finally got the lead on a two-point jump shot by Whitney Keith. A few impatient and over excited turnovers by the Panthers helped the Vikings tie the game at 45, but a steal by junior Lucy Keith and a dish to senior Leslie Briggs for a score put the Panthers ahead for good. Free throws by the Panthers down the stretch sealed the game, as Parish outscored Nolan 22-10 to win the game 51-47.
The Panthers play next on Nov. 11 at 6pm at W.T. White.
