Boys’ Soccer Advances to Second Round of Playoffs
Two overtimes and 10 rounds of penalty kicks gives Parish a 2-1 win
updated February 13, 2007
Junior Ashton Smith celebrated his birthday Saturday by scoring the game-winning penalty kick to give Parish a 2-1 sudden death victory over Northland Christian School on Feb. 10.

Northland started out the game skillfully and played Parish very physically. Sophomore Michael DeLong made several spectacular saves in goal and allowed only one score in regulation. Parish didn’t score until junior Alex Kaiser made a brilliant goal in the 82nd minute. Regulation ended knotted at 1-1.

The teams headed into a 10-minute overtime period where the first goal would win the game. Parish dominated but failed to score, sending the game into a second 10-minute overtime period. After a total of 110 minutes of play, the score remained tied, forcing both teams into a penalty kick shootout.

In round one of the penalty kicks, Northland shot first but missed over the goal bar. Parish’s junior Jeff Nussbaumer stepped up and buried his shot in the corner giving Parish a 1-0 lead. In round two, senior David Witten followed Northland’s score by blasting the ball past the keeper. With a third round 2-1 Parish advantage, Northland scored the tying goal and made a good save on junior Alex Kaiser’s attempt, keeping Parish from maintaining a lead. In round four, Northland scored, and freshman Daniel Salas followed with a confident goal to send the game into the final round of penalty kicks tied at three a piece. Northland missed over the goal bar in the final round, and junior Chris Rivas wasn’t able to capitalize on his normal emotionally steady play, as he hit the ball over the bar. Tied at three, both teams went to the sudden-death penalty kick round.

Round six resulted in the same outcome, a 3-3 tie. In round seven and eight both teams scored in each round, sending the game into round nine tied at five. The game remained tied through round nine, and then Northland missed to open round 10. The nail-biting game was sealed when the birthday boy Smith got the best birthday present of sending Parish into the next round of the playoffs with his game-winning kick.

Parish moves on to play at Fort Worth Christian at 3 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 17 with the winner moving on to the “Final Four”.

Boys varsity soccer edges Prestonwood, heads to playoffs   February 7, 2007
It was a tough draw for the Parish Panthers. They had to beat Prestonwood Christian on their home turf, and it wasn’t winner takes all.

Parish had to win its last soccer match of the season to advance to the playoffs; Prestonwood just had to tie. But the Panthers pulled out a great come-from-behind victory in a nail biter that had fans holding their breath until the last seconds of stoppage play.

Prestonwood came out strong, scoring first at about the 15-minute mark. However, Parish’s attacking game quickly evened the score at one-a-piece when Daniel Salas hooked up with Alex Kaiser to score in about the 20th minute.

The scoring for the match was wrapped up by halftime. Jeff Nussbaumer dribbled 60 yards and beat two defenders in the box to bury the ball in the net to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 lead just before the midway mark.

However, the Parish side had to secure its victory in the 47th minute of the second half when Trevor Ferre cleared a Lions’ shot-on-goal off the line by the narrowest of margins.

Playoffs begin this weekend
The boys head to North Houston on Feb. 10, for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Northland Christian Academy. The bus leaves the Midway Campus at 7:30 a.m., and fans are welcome to travel with the team. Cost is $15 round trip. Please make e-mail reservations with Coach Craig Savage at csavage@parishepiscopal.org as soon as possible so that a large enough bus can be on hand.

Middle School Soccer News:
7th and 8th Grade

Seventh and Eighth Grade Soccer begins practice on November 1, 3:45 – 5:00. Meet on the soccer field with cleats and shin guards.

5th and 6th Grade
I have news! While the exact game schedules are not finished, I have dates for when we will have 5th and 6th soccer.

Please put the following dates on your calendar.

November 3, 4:00–5:15 - Player evaluation and team placement
We have players who have been playing for many years and others who are just starting. In order to best design appropriate practices, the players will be split into two teams. Team “Royal” and Team “Red” (although they will have the same uniform). This will also help in attempts to schedule competitive games versus appropriate opponents.

Practice and game dates
(times TBA but most likely directly after school)
November 7, 10, 14, 17, 28
December 1, 5, 8, 12, 15

On these ten contact dates we will schedule 5 games. The other dates will be practices. If more opportunities for games arise we may add some more.

Saturday Soccer Clinics, 5th & 6th Graders
December 2, 1:00-3:30pm
December 16 and January 20,  9:00-11:30am
These clinics will be run for 5th & 6th grade soccer players. The Parish Soccer Coaching staff with help from varsity players will take the players through some of the elements of a varsity practice in a fun atmosphere. Players should dress in layers, wear cleats and shin guards, and bring a ball and some water.

E-mail Craig Savage (csavage@parishepiscopal.org) one week prior if you plan on attending so he will know the approximate numbers to expect.

Locations for all the above events are here on campus, except for the “away” games.  More details are forthcoming.

Thank you for your Patience and Support,
