Baseball Coaching Staff

Dave Ostroff, Head Varsity Coach
A Southeastern Virginia native, Dave Ostroff’s collegiate baseball 'claim-to-fame' is that he was part of Coach Bob Whalen's first class of baseball recruits at Dartmouth College in the Ivy League. He jokingly admits that he was 'the worst player in all of Division I.’

Dave played his high school baseball at Norfolk Academy, an independent school similar to Parish in its commitment to balancing excellence in academics, athletics and the fine arts. A four-year varsity letterman, he played on four conference championship teams and two statewide private schools' title winners. Dave also earned all-state recognition and conference MVP honors as a senior.

The 2008 season marks Coach Ostroff’s 14th year of teaching and coaching in independent schools, and he has worked previously as an assistant in four high school baseball programs: Hanover High School (NH), North Cross School (VA), Greenhill School (TX), and Savannah Country Day School (GA). In his first season as a varsity head coach, Coach Ostroff led the Canterbury Cougars to a Final Four appearance in the school's first trip to TAPPS’ 1-A Texas state playoffs.

Coach Ostroff’s club teams have averaged nearly 30 wins each season over the last seven summers. After a two-year stint with the Dallas Mustangs, Coach Ostroff helped to build the McKinney Marshals and continues to coach the Marshals’ elite 17u ball club. Young men from Coach Ostroff’s high school and summer teams are sprinkled throughout college baseball--from Austin College, Penn, and Yale to Davidson, Washington and Lee, and UT-Austin. Coach Ostroff’s 2007 Marshals finished with a record of 41-7. The team captured Premier Baseball’s Sophomore National Championship at Texas A&M and Perfect Game’s WWBA World Underclass National Championship in Fort Myers, Florida.

Dax Powell, Assistant Varsity Coach
Long-time Dallas-area coach Dax Powell’s baseball career began in his hometown of Denison, Texas, where he led the Yellow Jackets to the UIL state playoffs in 1992-93 and an appearance in the state finals in Austin.

After high school, Powell earned a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma where he pitched two years for the Sooners. He was a part of the 1994 College World Championship team, and the next year proved no different, as Powell and the Sooners made it back to Omaha. After the 1995 season, Powell transferred to the University of Texas where he played in 1996, and the ‘Horns won the SWC. After suffering an elbow injury at Texas, Powell was forced to retire from baseball and to focus on academics and a coaching career.

From UT, Powell became a coach at Grayson Community College from 1997-’01, where the team won back-to-back JUCO National Championships and he started his reputation as one of the premier pitching coaches in the DFW area. From Grayson, Powell became a coach with the Dallas Mustangs and then worked with the Texas Rangers staff as a BP pitcher and assistant bullpen coach. From the Rangers, Powell served as the pitching coach for the Texas Collegiate League’s Coppell Copperheads and the Euless Lone Stars. In the summer of 2006, Powell took a group of local kids and coached the Dallas Curve to a state and regional championship. Powell coaches the McKinney Marshals’ elite 16u ball club in the summer.

Coach Powell serves as a varsity assistant coach and handles the Panthers' pitching staff.

Brett McCabe, Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach McCabe began his college baseball career with Washington State University in the Pac-10. He later played in the Chicago Cubs organization. After his playing career had ended, Coach McCabe became an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for South Dakota State University. He later was named head coach of Augustana College in Division II. Two of Coach McCabe’s players at Augustana were drafted and played professional baseball – the first and second in school history. More recently, Coach McCabe served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the University of Kansas in the Big 12 Conference.

In addition to his work as hitting coach / offensive coordinator for the Panthers, Coach McCabe coaches the McKinney Marshals 14u elite ball club and works as a professional baseball instructor with athletes from around the Dallas area.

Adam Yates, Head JV Coach
After stints as an infielder at Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene universities, Adam Yates signed and played professional baseball with the Frontier League's River City Rattlers in the summer of 2006. A McKinney native, local fans will remember Yates’ standout career at McKinney High School and his summers with the McKinney Marshals in the highly competitive Texas Collegiate League. Coach Yates continued his pro career in 2007, finishing among the offensive leaders with the Lewisville Lizards in the Continental Baseball League here in North Texas.

Coach Yates works with varsity hitters and infielders in addition to leading the JV program.
